Orderly plan = .313 baseball since deadline

By Jake • Aug 17th, 2008 • Category: Jake's Take

Quick observations.
Another game, another loss.   If we continue to play .313 baseball all the rest of the way, we’ll obtain the 4th pick in the 2009 draft, all things remaining equal.  I suppose that’s the only silver lining to all this since we aren’t evaluating talent from the farm other than a few arms which we [...]

Ho-hum, 10th loss last 15

By Jake • Aug 16th, 2008 • Category: Jake's Take

Boring, boring baseball.
McLouth misplaying flyballs, Pearce with absolutely no idea how to cover the ball defensively, we’re puting down sac bunts with our pitcher twice in a game we’re down four or more runs, Doumit is so slow out of the box batting lefty that on a slow squibbler to third with a man at [...]

Power woes continue; lose to Mets

By Jake • Aug 15th, 2008 • Category: Jake's Take

“The Pirates lack of scoring can be attributed to the fact they have been playing contending teams since the deadline which have better quality pitching.”  Bob Walk said something like that 8/15 during the Pirates MLB broadcast
-

While it’s true the Pirates have played four teams in the thick of their division races, one quick look [...]

Clutch is broke; Reds take series

By Jake • Aug 14th, 2008 • Category: Jake's Take

Pirates offense:
1st: Runners at first in second and no outs.  Stranded.
5th: Runner at third less than 2 outs.  Stranded.
7th: Bases loaded, no outs.  Stranded.
Reds record in August before hitting PNC: 1-9, and they won 2 of 3 in this series.
Reds batting last 10 days: 2cd worst in MLB at .230. Reds BA in series: .255.
Reds pitching [...]

Out of the Fogg comes a win

By Jake • Aug 13th, 2008 • Category: Jake's Take

Take the pitcher with the worst ERA in the game (more than 60 innings) and pit him against the team with the worst OPS and BA in the game last seven days (.580 OPS, .209 BA) and what do you get?
A team that manages just six hits over 4.2 innings with five of the six going for [...]

Volquez, Bucs indifference = loss

By Jake • Aug 12th, 2008 • Category: Jake's Take

The Pirates came off a four city road tour to play in their home park, more than 23,000 fans showed up to watch them, and how did the players respond?
Indifferent, during the game, that is.  Going through the motions.  Call it anything you want.
Slow to the ball in the outfield by the corners and even slower to throw, [...]

Bucs walk to win

By Jake • Aug 11th, 2008 • Category: Jake's Take

What a game - Mets pitching issued seven walks to us and four of them came around to score.  If you can’t beat them with the bat, beat them standing there doing nothing I always say.
Goodness gracious.
But kudos to the Bucs for being patient.  The Mets pen has been a disaster and they showed why Monday [...]

Demoralizing loss, in more ways than one

By Jake • Aug 10th, 2008 • Category: Jake's Take

I didn’t mind that the Pirates could only scratch out three runs in this game because I expect little run support in most games now.
I didn’t mind that Davis and Doumit got crossed up on Moyer’s sac bunt with Ruiz at first in the third which became a royal fiasco allowing Ruiz to score and Moyer [...]

Bucs four cylinders aren’t enough

Optimists game summary
Since I have a minority that like to whine and cry every day in the comment section here, I thought I’d give you one game summary you might read at the Post-Gazette every night.  Enjoy it - that’s all you’ll ever get.
Snell took the mound and threw 106 quality pitches allowing just eight hits and [...]

Saturday pre-game stuff

By Jake • Aug 9th, 2008 • Category: Jake's Take

I was going over Saturday night’s game matchups and noticed something a little strange about Myers.
Take a look at the two strike zone charts below.  The top one charts every pitch he has thrown at home this year and the bottom one charts every pitch he’s thrown.  What can you see right off the bat?
Right, he [...]
