Coach Corbin on Pedro Alvarez

Vanderbilt’s esteemed manager Tim Corbin answered a few quick questions today for Bucco Blog on Pedro Alvarez:

1.  I spoke with two amateur scouts and both mentioned that some have questioned Alvarez’s long-term projectability at third. How would you respond to those questions and where do you see him seven years from now?

“He stays at 3rd Base – he is a very good athlete – plus arm and he moves well.”

2.  Line to line masher, or dead pull hitter?  In the same line, do you see 30 home run potential?

“Line to line power – absolute 30 HR potential.”

3.  Since college splits are hard to find for the average fan, can you share with us his lefty/righty splits this year?

“He is the same right now – .338 v. LHP and RHP.”

4.  Has he always bat lefty or was he a switch-hitter who settled on the left side?

“Always hit LH.”

5.  How would you rate his tools?

“70 Power – 60 Hit – 55 Arm – 45 Speed – 45 Defense.”

6.  Any lingering effects from the hamate injury?  Is he 100% now?  Any other college injuries the fans might not of heard about?

“He is 100% now – there was no pain after the injury, but his timing was off – he is on now.”

7.  High school up, has he played any other position?

“He played SS in high school.”

  1. Posey.

  2. If he can stay at third I would love the pick. If he will move to first, then I’m not too excited. If he played short in high school he can probably at least play outfield in the bigs. Lefty bat with 30+ hr potential does sound good. Rays still may take him. They are closer to competing than the Bucs. If Alvarez is the real deal and should be ready in 2009, think about him playing somewhere in the Rays lineup. They could really be a factor in ‘09. The Pirates need to take the best player that the Rays don’t take. If Alvarez is gone then they should go for Tim Beckham.

  3. I saw him play twice last year: once against MTSU and once against Florida. I\’m no scout, but he looked good at the plate and adequate at third. I’d be excited to see him in black and gold because the guy can hit.

  4. with the new manegment team i really think the pirates will draft the best player avalible. If Alvarez is avalible they really should get him, and i really hope they do draft alvarez it looks like he will be are starting 2009 third basmen also. it will also be a bright future with alvarez, Mccuchen, Pearce, and walker.
