Here’s a couple of tidbits from Spring Training that have been making the rounds in the Burgh’….

First off, it appears that being in top physical condition was high on the priority list of most of the young Buccos. All of the pitchers and catchers have reported in excellent shape, which is a welcome change from last year when several key players (Paulino, Gorzo) came into camp overweight. Whether this new found fitness equates into victories or better stats is yet to be seen, but it’s good to know these guys are at least trying to stay in shape.

Also being noticed for his conditioning is first round pick Pedro Alvarez. He still looks to be a good candidate to switch to first in this reporter’s eyes, but at least he won’t have to make the change anytime soon. In his limited media sessions thus far, Pedro sounds more humble and much more likeable than he did whilst hitting all of agent Scott Boras’ talking points during his extended contract debacle, which should help his chances of not being hated by the fans.

Brandon Moss seems to be fully healed from his off season knee surgery, which wasn’t nearly as major as was once thought. The guess is that he’ll be brought along rather slowly, just to be safe. He’s expected to start in right field for the PBC, and this year will be his audition to see if he’s someone who we can build around. He definitely has a powerful swing, but his main problem seemed to be striking out. My thoughts are, if he hits enough homeruns, it compensates for the K’s (just look at the contract Ryan Howard just got, and the money Adam Dunn will get), but 150 K’s and 20 HR’s just won’t cut it.

Nyjer Morgan looks to be the favorite to start the season in left field, however don’t count out new acquisitions Eric Hinske and Craig Monroe. The major concern with Morgan is his inexperience, as he’s never had over 300 at bats in an MLB season. His speed would definitely be an asset in our lineup, but so would Hinske’s power numbers. It will probably come down to whoever plays better in the spring, and my bet is on the veteran Hinske.

Another big change has been with pitching coach Joe Kerrigan, who so far seems very engaged with his players. All indications are that he has the pitching staff looking good at this very early point in spring training, which doesn’t mean anything other then he’s doing what he’s supposed to do, but is still an encouraging sign. Look for the Bucco’s staff to improve this season, however don’t expect it to be an overnight process. If we could end up with a rotation ranked in the top two-thirds of the NL, it would go a long way towards respectability.

Finally, look for starting pitcher to be the most hotly contested position on the team during the spring. Paul Maholm is a lock for the rotation, with Ian Snell and Zach Duke near locks. Tom Gorzelanny has come to camp in excellent shape, and has looked sharp thus far, which is good news for him if he wants to stay in the rotation. That leaves one, maybe two spots in the rotation, and there are plenty of pitchers trying to fill them. Jeff Karstens, Daniel McCutchen, Ross Ohlendorf and Jimmy Barthmaier are all competing for the spot, along with Phil Dumatrait, who may or may not be ready for the start of the season.

I’ll post more news and notes after all of the position players report, until then, GO BUCS!!!

  1. Nice read here.

i like the fact that they took the off season seriously.

I spoke with Gorzo and he assured me that hes healthy. He looked to be in very good shape too,

  2. One guy that I’m following pretty closely is Craig Hansen. Hes a former first round pick of the Red Sox, who the Pirates have aquired in the Bay deal.
Theres a pretty good article HERE about him and others that are bubble players

  3. Just so I know how much to trust to put into your opinion, are you actually in Bradenton watching with your own eyes, or listening to the tidbits making the rounds…..?
