Hickory Crawdads - Gary Green

Gary Green has been named the manager of the 2008 Hickory Crawdads who are the Low-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates based in Hickory, North Carolina.  Gary will return to Hickory for a second season…

On my first post to the new and improved Bucco Blog, I would like to take a moment to introduce myself to those of you who don’t know me.  My name is John and a photographer in Hickory, North Carolina.  I string for my local newspaper and for MiLB.com during baseball season.  I attend Hickory Crawdads baseball games regularly during the season with my camera in hand.  I also do photography for the Hickory Crawdads organization in the form of team and promotional photography as well as a couple sets of baseball card images each season.  I spend a lot of time in the dugout and in the clubhouse, so I get a good opportunity to get to know these guys each season.  One of the best lessons I have learned over the last few seasons is that the numbers don’t tell you everything about a player.  I have made a lot of friends in this organization over the last few years, and I’m really looking forward to seeing some of those guys play with the Pirates as early as the 2008 season.  Steve Pearce made his showing last season.  In my opinion, his track was one of the fastest I have seen so far.  We have a few more on the farm who could get their calls this season, so it will be fun to watch.

I cracked my piggy bank in December and purchased a cheap video camera, so I hope to provide a good ‘look’ at a few players this season.  In the back of my mind, I keep wondering if this year will provide a special treat for Hickory.  It IS entirely possible that we’ll have two first round draft picks in our starting pitching rotation this season.  If Daniel Moskos doesn’t jump past Low-A ball and Brad Lincoln returns to Hickory to pitch after his TJ surgery rehabilitation is over, we might just get to see this happen.  Brad Lincoln’s time in Hickory was brief before his injuries got the best of him.

There isn’t much going on in Hickory just yet, but I have posted the 2008 Schedule for the team if you want to check that out.  I’ll have a team roster, with player photos, posted sometime during the first week of April.  I’ll probably attend the Hot Stove Banquet in February, but I won’t have much more information to post before then…
